Fireproof Safes: Protecting Documents & Valuables

A house fire can destroy irreplaceable documents in under two minutes. A fireproof safe protects what matters most.

Passports, birth certificates, social security cards, property deeds, wills, insurance policies — these are critical, often irreplaceable documents. A house fire can destroy them in under two minutes. A quality fireproof safe protects your most important documents even in a total house fire, and many also protect against water damage from firefighting efforts.

Replace vs protect: Replacing a lost passport takes 4–8 weeks. Replacing a lost property deed involves legal proceedings. Replacing a lost will can trigger family disputes. A $60–$200 fireproof safe prevents all of this.

Why It Matters

UL Fire Ratings Explained

UL 72 Class 350 means the interior stays below 350°F (the point at which paper ignites) during a fire of a specified duration — 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours. The higher the duration, the more protection. For most homes, a 1-hour Class 350 safe is sufficient. If you're in a large home, go for 2 hours.

Water Resistance

Firefighting water and sprinkler systems can soak an unprotected safe and destroy documents even if they survived the fire itself. Look for safes that carry both a fire rating and a water submersion/resistance rating. Many UL-listed fireproof safes also carry an ETL water resistance certification.

Digital Media Protection

Standard document safes maintain the interior below 350°F — but CDs, USB drives, and hard drives require a Class 125 rating (interior below 125°F). Standard document safes will destroy digital media even while protecting paper. Always verify the rating before storing backup drives or optical media.

Bolt It Down

An unbolted safe can simply be carried away by thieves. Most fireproof safes include mounting holes in the floor or back for bolting to floor joists or wall studs. Always use these — the safe is only as secure as its anchor.
