Kitchen fires, electrical fires, and small accidental fires are common in homes. A fire extinguisher within reach — and knowing how to use it — can stop a small fire before it destroys your home. The NFPA estimates a fire is reported every 23 seconds in the US. Don't wait to be a statistic.
Why It Matters
ABC Ratings Explained
Class A covers ordinary combustibles — wood, paper, and fabric. Class B covers flammable liquids like grease and oil. Class C covers electrical fires. An ABC-rated extinguisher handles all three types — the correct choice for most home locations. For kitchens, a Class K extinguisher specifically designed for cooking oils provides additional protection.
Where to Place Them
Keep extinguishers in the kitchen (near the exit, never next to the stove), the garage, the workshop, and near any room with a fireplace. Mount at eye level on a wall bracket so they're instantly visible and accessible. A hidden extinguisher is a useless one.
The PASS Technique
Pull the pin. Aim at the base of the fire — not the flames. Squeeze the handle firmly. Sweep side to side across the base. Practice this until it's automatic. In an emergency with adrenaline pumping, muscle memory is what works.
Maintenance
Check the pressure gauge monthly — the needle should be in the green zone. Have the unit professionally inspected annually. After any discharge — even a small test burst — replace or recharge the extinguisher immediately. A partially used extinguisher may not function fully when needed.
